Stone restoration in Buckingham & Furlong

Buckingham is farm country with a long stone history: fieldstone houses, bank barns, field walls and some of the county's best-kept old properties. It is just down the road from us, and we work here constantly.

The short answer

In Buckingham Township and Furlong, American Stone LS repoints fieldstone houses and barns with lime-rich mortar, restores and rebuilds stone walls and pillars, restores flagstone patios and walkways, and seals stone with breathable penetrating sealers. Luciano and Alex Sansalone are local fourth-generation stonemasons and give free on-site estimates.

Some of the oldest buildings in this part of the county are in Buckingham. The Buckingham Friends Meeting House, built of stone in 1768, still stands in Lahaska. All around it are farms with fieldstone houses and bank barns, and miles of old walls. It is our neighborhood, and we know its stone well.

What we see in Buckingham

  • Field walls and retaining walls that have lost their caps or started to bulge after years of wet winters.
  • Farmhouse walls due for repointing on the side that takes the weather.
  • Bank barns with open joints, loose corners and water running against the foundation.
  • Entrance pillars with loose caps and failing joints.
  • Bluestone terraces that need repointing, resetting and sealing.

What we do here

Most Buckingham jobs are about keeping good old stone in service: repointing, stone wall and pillar restoration, patio and walkway restoration and sealing. When a wall section has failed, we take it down and relay it with its own stone, on a proper footing and with drainage behind it, so it matches the rest of the property.

A client's words

Peter Wallach of Buckingham called us "easily the top mason contractor in Bucks County." We work hard to keep earning that, one property at a time.

Questions we hear on site

Can you repair an old dry-laid field wall?
Yes. Dry-laid walls are reset and rebuilt stone by stone without mortar, using the stone that is already there. Mortared walls are repointed and recapped.
Do you restore bank barns?
Yes. We repoint barn walls and foundations, rebuild failed corners and openings, and fix the drainage that usually caused the damage.
How often should I have my stone checked?
Every few years for the house, and every spring after a hard winter for walls, steps and patios. A quick look catches small joint failures before they let water in.
